75th Anniversary Events

2008 marked CARA's 75th anniversary year. This important milestone was marked by a number of events/projects including:

the launch of a book: 'The Refuge and the Fortress: Britain and the flight from tyranny', by Jeremy Seabrook (published by Palgrave Macmillan), in November 2008.  Various articles and reviews can be found via the link above.

a 2 day conference: 'In Defence of Learning: The Past and the Present', held at The British Academy on 4th and 5th December 2008. A publication of papers will be available later this year but if you would like to see the programme or a paper in the meantime, please visit the link above.

a 65 mile CARA Cycle Challenge from the University of Cambridge to University College London, which included over 65 cyclists and raised over £10,000 for CARA's work. This is now an annual event. Please visit the link above for further details.

three public lectures by Justice Albie Sachs, Nigel Harris and Dr Ralph Kohn. These lectures can be heard again through the link above.

a 20 and 60km sponsored walk across the South Downs, which raised several thousand pounds in support of persecuted academics. Details can be found in the link above. 

and a Virtual Exhibition, celebrating the extraordinary contributions made by refugee academics to the Sciences, Arts and Humanities since 1933. This is due to be launched in December 2009.
