Forthcoming Lectures
CARA/BIS ACADEMIC FREEDOM DISCUSSIONS
In collaboration with the BIS, CARA will be running a series of panel discussions at UK universities throughout the 2009/2010 academic year. These will focus on the important role of academics and academic freedom in society and the specific problems faced by academics in trying to carry out their work under repressive conditions.
22nd March, 5-630pm, University of East London,' Academic Freedom in the 21st Century,' Chaired by Mark Stephens, Chair of UEL Governors, Libel Layer and trustee of Index of Censorship. Panel discussion by three academic refugees from Iran, Sudan, and Zimbabwe who will discuss the personal threats and difficulties they faced as academics.
23rd March 1-230pm, London School of Economics, Wolfson Theater, New Academic Building, Lincoln's Inn Fields. Chaired by Tom Porteous of Human rights Watch, hosting a panel discussion with Giles Ji Ungpakorn, a Thai academic and author who in 2009 fled to the UK after being charged under Lese-Majesty laws, which forbid criticism of the king, Mina Al-Lami, an Iraqi visiting fellow at the LSE under the Scholars at Risk Scheme, and Joseph a lecturer from Camerron who fled to the UK for political reasons.
26 April, 5-7pm, The University of Cambridge, in conjunction with the Centre for Human Rights and Governance and CRASSH. Chaired by Professor Sir Martin Harris, president of Clare Hall. Hosting a refugee academic from Zimbabwe, Iran, and the President of the Exiled Journalists Network at UEL, Dr Abel Ugba.
3rd May, University of Birmingham, hosting a panel discussion between a refugee academic from Zimbabwe, Iraq, and the Chair of English Pen, Eva Hoffman.
